Al Franken v Norm Coleman Minnesota Supreme Court Opinion

June 30, 2009

Uncategorized

I suppose it’s all over but the cryin. Today, the Supreme Court of Minnesota officially declared that Al Franken had rightfully won the state’s Senate seat over incumbent Norm Coleman.

The ruling came down after literally seven months of back-and-forth between the two candidates and their respective camps. The election was initially too close to call on November 4, and a recount was declared. After the first stage of the recount Coleman was declared the winner. The second recount, however, showed Franken had won. Coleman challenged and eventually after enough suits, the case went all the way to the state’s Supreme Court.

This is big news, not only because Al Franken — author of such politically ardent works as “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them” and “The Truth - With Jokes” and a Saturday Night Live alumnus — is now a hoity-toity United States senator, but also because it gives the Democrats a 60-40 advantage over the Republicans in the Senate. We’ve already seen that the 60-40 split won’t exactly guarantee anything, given the way the so-called “Blue-Dog” Democrats have voted, but Franken is a pretty true-blue liberal.
