Anti Smoking Bill
President Obama has now officially signed the Family Smoking and Prevention Act. The President noted his own battle with the sticks as he signed the bill into law.
The new law bans candy and fruit flavors in tobacco products, and it limits advertising that could attract young people.
The anti-smoking bill also allows the FDA to lower the amount of addiction-causing nicotine in tobacco products and block misleading labels such “low tar” and “light.” Tobacco companies also will be required to cover their cartons with large graphic warnings.
Smokers can rest assured, though, that the law won’t let the FDA ban nicotine or tobacco outright.
It’s rough being an executive at a tobacco company these days. The government won’t let you sell to kids, advertise to kids, advertise on TV, advertise on billboards, pay people to smoke or generally make tobacco seem appealing to anyone in any way. Now, they can’t put fruity flavors in their product and they’ll have the FDA in their business throughout all time. I hear GM is hiring, though.
Here’s the law.
