Nestle Recall

June 19, 2009

Health

The Nestle Corporation issued a voluntary recall of its Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products today after several illnesses were reported by those who ate the raw dough.

The company said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are both looking into reported E. coli illnesses that might be related to the ingestion of raw cookie dough. According to the FDA, there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states since March. The Nestle cookie dough recall includes refrigerated cookie bar dough, cookie dough tub, cookie dough tubes, limited edition cookie dough items, seasonal cookie dough and Ultimates cookie bar dough. It does not affect any other Toll House products. Officially, 25 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.

One wonders if this will prompt mothers everywhere to tell their kids not to eat raw cookie dough because it will get them sick. However, in a blow to said mothers, the FDA is not encouraging consumers to even eat the dough cooked because the bacteria could get onto their hands or other cooking surfaces. The FDA’s full release is below.
