MLB Drug Policy List of Banned Substances

May 7, 2009

Dodger’s OF Mann Ramirez found himself in quite a bit of hot water today when it was revealed that he had been suspended by Major League Baseball for failing a urine test for performance enhancing drugs. It was also learned today that the drug Manny was guilty of using was hgc, or human chorionic gonadotropin, a drug traditionally found in pregnant women, but one that has been linked to revitalizing a man’s testosterone after using and getting off steroids.

Ramirez is probably the second most high-profile player to be found guilty of using performance enhancers, after Alex Rodriguez, but Ramirez is the most high profile to be caught using since baseball instituted the testing program in 2004 with consequences for players who test positive. Ramirez will be suspended for 50 games and not appealed the suspension. He released an official statement saying he accepts responsibility for the positive test and that he was given the substance from a doctor.

The document below is the MLB’s full statement on its newly implemented drug policy and details just what drugs players are not permitted to use. Any MLB player who has not read the document below in full, should probably do so now. In fact, print it out.
