Sylvia Plath Poems

News

After Sylvia Plath’s son Nicholas Hughes was found dead, apparently of his own hand, the world seems to be collectively mourning his death and developing a greater curiosity about the life of his parents.

Sylvia Plath, while often thought of as a martyr for second-wave (angry) feminism because of her writing and the way she died, was and always has been one of my personal favorites. Personally, I believe her poems can be enjoyed even if you’re not angry at your father and/or your spouse.

A great many dissertations have been written about her life and her writing and she is one of the most talked about and often polarizing figures in all of American poetry — maybe even in all of literature. Plath met her end when she gassed herself in her oven while her children slept. The irony of Nicholas Hughes’ suicide is that Plath killed herself when Hughes was only 8-years-old, meaning he grew up without his mother. A great deal of Plath’s followers and criticis have attributed the anger of her writing to the fact that she grew up without a father. Most agree that the anger displayed by Plath in her famous poem “Daddy” is due to his absence in her life.

For those who have also garnered a new interest in Plath’s poetry or have just had their existing interest in Plath reignited by her name appearing in the news, the document below should be a welcome gift. It’s a collection of a number of Plath’s most popular and best writings. You’re welcome.
