Terrell Owens Released
Is it a sad or happy day for Dallas Cowboys fans? After thorough perusal of various message boards, websites and blogs, I still can’t come to a consensus. The Cowboys paid Owens a $12 million signing bonus just last year, which was included as part of a new four-year, $34 million deal. The Boys will take a roughly $9 million salary-cap hit with the release of Owens.
From a financial perspective, it’s obviously not a smart move. The $9 million hit is going to hurt and the lack of a first and third round draft pick this year — they went to Detroit in the trade for Roy Williams — is going to make it hard to trade for anyone of big name recognition. The move is also reportedly going to cost the Cowboys an extra $1 million not to have Owens on the team. T.O. would have made $8 million in base salary next season. It will, however, save Jones $9 million in the over the next two years of Owens’ contract. So, the big question everyone is asking is whether this makes the Cowboys a better team or a worse team.
Owens reportedly almost got into a fist fight with tight end Jason Witten and had words with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, quarterback Tony Romo and a number of other players. Other reports about Owens and former coach Bill Parcells say that the two never actually spoke outside of games.
With the addition of Roy E. Williams, the Cowboys will now be down a great playmaker, but they do have a man to turn to as their number one receiver. The Boys also have the best tight end in football and a stable of running backs at their disposal. This move will also put the spotlight for the 2009-10 season squarely on the shoulders of Tony Romo. It will be interesting to see how he does.
