Presidential Inauguration Firsts

January 20, 2009

Today is an historic day for the United States of America, as the country swears in its very first African-American President.

Barack Obama was sworn in today as commander-in-chief of the country and will be attending inauguration festivities throughout the day. Some have estimated that today will cost about $170 million, but that is not the most expensive inaugural in history.

The document below details some other Presidential firsts that the US has seen on inauguration day. The most interesting fact I found was that John F. Kennedy was the last President to wear the once-traditional “stovepipe” hat (check out the document to see just what that is). When LBJ was sworn in aboard Air Force One — making him the first President ever sworn in by a woman, coincidentally — he had no time, and I assume no real desire to wear the ol’ stovepipe. Since then, no President has ever worn the stovepipe hat to the inauguration.

This and other (much more) interesting facts about Presidential inauguration firsts can be found below.
