Porn Bailout

It has officially come to this. The adult entertainment industry is preparing to ask Congress for a bailout similar to the one given to the auto industry recently. Adult entertainment will be represented by the illustrious Joe Francis and Larry Flynt, two of the adult industry’s most notorious and scandalous characters.

Somehow I get the feeling that these two aren’t legitimately trying to get a bailout, but actually attempting to bring a bit of publicity to their respective organizations that have been seeing slumps recently. The porn business has certainly seen a decline in funds, but most anyone would tell you that the downturn in porn has been due more to the ubiquity of free content on the internet than to problems with the economy.

Absurd as the claims of Francis and Flynt may seem, the two may actually be making a valid point. Why are the US automakers any more justified in asking for a bailout than the US pornographers? Both industries manufacture and sell a product and both products are adversely affected by a slumping economy. Both industries were seeing negative buying trends in their businesses prior to the most recent economic woes.

Aside from the glaring differences between the two industries, the main difference — and the main reason the porn industry has zero chance of actually being granted even a cent by Congress — is that the major US auto manufacturers are publicly traded companies that bear a stake in the US stock market and national economy. All the porn companies are privately owned, individual companies and LLCs, which are in no way connected to anyone outside the individuals conducting business inside them.

It has been quite the spectacle watching Francis and Flynt on CNN these past couple days, though, and I’m sure this will help sales of “Girls Gone Wild” and “Hustler” a little bit.
