The Nobel Prize for Medicine for the year 2008 has been announced; this kicks off the Nobel Prize ceremony for this year. The award is being shared by three European scientists. The discoverers of the HIV virus, French researchers Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier were rewarded along with Germany’s Harald zur Hausen who has won the prize for discovering the human pappilloma virus that causes cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women.

Harald zur Hausen gets to keep half of the award money. The total prize money is 10 million kroner.
