In the pharma business, an approval from the FDA is like vital oxygen that keeps a business running till the next approval. Eli Lilly could get a big dose of oxygen if the FDA approves is blood thinner Prasugrel. Prasugrel is a member of the thienopyridine class of ADP receptor inhibitors, like ticlopidine (trade name Ticlid) and clopidogrel (trade name Plavix). These agents are believed to reduce the aggregation (”clumping”) of platelets by irreversibly binding to P2Y12 receptors.

If approved, prasugrel will go on the market immediately under the name Effient.
