The first US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be permanently based overseas arrived in the Japanese port of Yokosuka on Thursday morning, welcomed by a US navy band and catcalls from Japanese protesters. The USS George Washington is a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier with a capacity for 75 aircraft. The flight deck is 1092 feet long.

The protesters were apprehensive of the safety record of the ship which had to deal with a fire in May. The ship is around 25 years old. One would imagine that WW2 atomic bombings would figure somewhere in the protests but apparently the issue is not relevant to the protesters.
