Mediterranean Diet
The modern version of the Mediterranean diet was put forward by Dr. Walter Willett of Harvard University’s School of Public Health in the mid-1990s. The Mediterranean diet is based on the traditional diet patterns of the Mediterranean region that includes Crete, the Levant, Turkey, parts of Italy, South France, and the Balkans. The Mediterranean diet stresses plenty of plant food, fresh fruit, fat from olive oil, cheese, yogurt, moderate amounts of fish and poultry, and low amounts of red meat. The diet is often cited as beneficial for being low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat and dietary fiber.
