Contraflow operations involve opening all main lanes on an evacuation route for vehicles leaving the impacted area. Opening all lanes for outbound traffic allows for the movement of the maximum number of vehicles in the shortest amount of time. It allows for almost twice as many vehicles to depart an evacuation zone as normally would be possible. Drivers using contraflow lanes should exercise caution.
Select roads in coastal areas can open an extra lane of traffic under TxDOT’s Evaculane process. Evaculanes are road shoulders wide and smooth enough to be used as a travel lane during times of significant traffic congestion.
