Petermann Glacier

August 22, 2008

News, Science

The Petermann Glacier, the world’s largest floating glacier, has suffered a huge crack. The crack has caused a piece of ice with an area of 29 sq km to break off. Scientists predict that this glacier far up north, once thought to be immune to the effects of global warming, will suffer further disintegration within a year. Between the years 2000 and 2001this very same glacier had lost around 33 square miles of floating ice.

Researchers have noticed a crack developing further upstream and this is a major worry as a breakup at that juncture could lead to the loss of around 60 square miles of ice which is almost a third of what remains of this majestic ice mass.
