U.S. Hospital Death Rates

August 20, 2008

Health

Hospital death rates were closely guarded secrets, but that changed when the government’s best estimates of heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia death rates for every U.S. hospital for 2005 - 2007 became available online. The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) posted its new mortality estimates at http://www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov, along with more than two dozen other measures of how well hospitals meet patients’ needs. Death rates from heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia are widely viewed as yardsticks of a hospital’s overall performance. Here is a list of the facilities with the highest and lowest death rates compared to the national rate over the past two years.
