College Presidents Want to Lower the Drinking Age

August 19, 2008

Press Releases

College presidents from about 100 of the nation’s best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus. It’s called the Amethyst Initiative, and even though many big name universities support it, none of the UW schools have signed on. urging a revision of the drinking age from 21 to 18, in response to many recent studies which suggest that barring legal alcohol access to college-age students actually fuels on-campus binge drinking. The Amethyst Initiative, a coalition of university chancellors and presidents which formed last month, is behind the growing movement, and seems to be on the verge of a publicity onslaught. Here we have a list of the 100 college presidents who signed the statement as well as a press release given by MADD (Mother’s Against Drunk Driving) in response to this petition.
