Greco Roman wrestling is one of the two amateur wrestling styles that is used in Olympic contests. The chief distinguishing element of Greco Roman wrestling is that holds below the waist are not allowed. This has led to the deployment of several throws, holds, and techniques such as the body-lock and the gut-wrench.

Contrary to the name, Greco Roman traces its origins to a French form of wrestling made popular in the 19th century. This wrestling gained popularity initially because of its high throws. Greco Roman wrestling has come a long way from its earlier days in the 20th century when professional matches could go on fo r a couple of hours and were known for their brutality.
